De naam verwijst naar de heerlijkheid en de watermolen van de Watermeulenbeke (huidige Passendalebeek) uit de 15de eeuw. De watermolen verdween in 1543 en werd in 1668 vervangen door een windmolen. De windmolen werd verwoest tijdens WOI. Op Schuwe Maandag, 19 oktober 1914, probeerden de Engelsen de molen te dynamiteren, zonder succes. Een dag later staken de Duitsers deze molen in brand, samen met de 500 m westwaarts gelegen Keibergmolen in Beselare. Tot ver in de omtrek waren de vlammen te zien. De Duitsers verbouwden de molenwal tot schuilplaats. Ze richtten de Waterdamhoek in als rustkwartier.
Meer dan 65 jaar lang, tot in 2013, baatte Yvonne Verraes café Waterdam uit. Zij was gehuwd met de gekende melkboer Pol Delheye (volksnaam Pol Pap).

Le nom fait référence à la seigneurie et au moulin à eau de Watermeulenbeke (actuel Passchendaelebeek) du XVe siècle. Le moulin à eau a disparu en 1543 et a été remplacé par un moulin à vent en 1668. Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, le Shy Monday, le 19 octobre 1914, les Anglais tentent de dynamiter le moulin à vent, sans succès. Un jour plus tard, les Allemands mettent le feu à ce moulin, ainsi qu'au moulin Keiberg à Beselare, à 500 m à l'ouest. Les flammes étaient visibles de loin. Les Allemands transformèrent le mur du moulin en abri. Ils ont aménagé le Waterdamhoek comme aire de repos.
Pendant plus de 65 ans, jusqu'en 2013, Yvonne Verraes a exploité le café Waterdam. Elle était mariée au célèbre laitier Pol Delheye (nom populaire Pol Pap).

Waterdam
The name refers to the manor and the water mill of the Watermeulenbeke (current Passchendaelebeek) from the 15th century. The watermill disappeared in 1543 and was replaced by a windmill in 1668. During World War I, on ‘Schuwe’ Monday, October 19, 1914, the English tried to dynamite the windmill, without success. A day later, the Germans set fire to this mill, along with the Keiberg mill 500 m to the west in Beselare. The flames could be seen far and wide. The Germans converted the mill wall into a shelter. They set up the Waterdamhoek as a rest quarter.
For more than 65 years, until 2013, Yvonne Verraes ran café Waterdam. She was married to the well-known milkman Pol Delheye (popular name Pol Pap).
